340 g/m² Tote Bags: What a Magazine Publisher Ordered, and Why
Dela
A Danish magazine publisher ordered 100 custom-printed tote bags in 340 g/m² natural cotton, 38 x 42 cm, with side and bottom gussets and a one-colour logo print.
The heavyweight cotton was not a luxury choice. It was the only weight that holds a stack of magazines without going out of shape, and gussets were what stopped the bag from distorting the print.
This is what that order looked like from artwork to delivery.

What was in this custom printed tote bag order?
- 100 pieces, one design
- Natural cotton, 340 g/m², the heaviest weight we stock
- 38 x 42 cm, with side and bottom gussets
- One-colour screen print, one side
- Delivered to Denmark, EU shipping included in the price
One design, one colour, one weight. No sampling round, and no bespoke size.
That matters, because most of what makes a custom printed tote bag expensive is complexity rather than quality, and this order had none.

Why choose 340 g/m² cotton over 140 g/m²?
Print is dense. A magazine weighs far more than its size suggests, and three or four copies in a bag is a real load.
That load goes somewhere. In a 140 g/m² bag it goes into the fabric, which stretches, and into the handle seams, which are the first thing to fail.
At 340 g/m², the canvas is stiff enough to hold its own shape whether the bag is empty or full. It stands up on a table. It does not curl at the top edge after a month in a tote drawer. For a publisher, this is not a detail, because the bag is carrying the product it is advertising, and a sagging bag with your masthead on it is worse advertising than no bag at all.
The honest test is what the bag is for. If it is handed out at a fair and used once, 140 g/m² is the sensible spend.
If it is meant to be carried for a year, start at 220 g/m² and go to 340 g/m² when weight is the whole point.
38 x 42 cm, side and bottom gussets, custom logo print. Priced per unit at every quantity from 25 pieces.
What do gussets do on a custom printed tote bag?
A gusset is the extra panel that gives a bag depth.
Side and bottom gussets turn a flat envelope into a box, and that changes two things.
First, capacity. A flat tote forces anything rectangular to curve, so a stack of magazines bows the front panel outwards. With a bottom gusset, the stack sits flat, and the bag holds more without straining.
Second, and less obvious, is the print. A print sits on the front panel. If that panel is permanently curved around a load, the logo curves with it. On a gusseted bag, the front panel stays flat, so the print stays readable.
Anyone printing a wordmark or a masthead should treat gussets as part of the print decision, not just the capacity decision.
Which cotton weight suits which job?
| Weight | Feels like | Best for | Not for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 140 g/m² | Light, soft, foldable | Giveaways, welcome packs, sampling | Books, bottles, daily use |
| 180 to 200 g/m² | Everyday shopper | General branded use | Retail sale at a premium price |
| 220 g/m² | Substantial, holds shape | Shop bags, brand merchandise | The cheapest possible giveaway |
| 340 g/m² | Stiff canvas, stands up | Books, magazines, bags you sell | Bulk handouts on a tight budget |

How did the order actually run?
- Ordered online. Quantity and print colours chosen on the product page. No quote request, no waiting for a price.
- Artwork checked. The logo was supplied as a vector file, which is what we prefer. We check every file before anything moves.
- Digital proof. A proof showing the print at real size and position on the bag, sent before production.
- Written approval. Production starts only after the customer approves the proof in writing. Nothing is printed on an assumption.
- Production and delivery. Roughly 10 to 15 working days after approval, delivered to Denmark with shipping included.
The step people underestimate is the proof. It is the last moment when changing your mind is free, and it is worth spending an hour on rather than five minutes.
What does an order of 100 heavyweight tote bags cost?
Per-unit pricing is published on the product page for every quantity tier from 25 pieces upwards, and it falls as quantity rises.
There is no separate setup fee and no minimum order value, so the price you see at 100 pieces is the price you pay at 100 pieces. Prices are shown excluding VAT, and standard EU delivery is included.
Publishers usually find the decision is not heavyweight versus lightweight on cost alone. It is whether 100 heavyweight bags that get carried for a year beat 250 light ones that get used once.
For a masthead, the first is usually the better buy.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best weight for a custom printed tote bag that carries books?
200 g/m² is the practical floor and 340 g/m² is the right answer if the bag will be filled regularly. Below 200 g/m², the fabric stretches at the handle seams once a real load goes in, and the bag loses its shape after a handful of uses.
What is the minimum order for custom printed tote bags?
25 pieces per design. Designs cannot be mixed within that minimum, so 25 is 25 of the same artwork on the same bag. Per-unit prices for every quantity are on the product page.
How long does production take?
Around 10 to 15 working days after you approve the digital proof, plus delivery within the EU. For a launch date, count backwards from the day the bags need to be in the room and leave yourself time to approve the proof.
What file format should I send for the print?
Vector files are best: AI, EPS or PDF. If you only have a PNG or JPG, send it anyway. We check every file before production and will tell you if it needs redrawing before you have paid for anything to be printed.
Can I print on both sides of the bag?
Yes, on most products. It can be the same logo on both sides or a different design front and back. See double-sided tote bag printing for what is possible.

Pick your weight, choose your quantity, upload your logo. The price is on the page, and the proof comes before anything is printed.
