Burgundy or Bordeaux Tote Bags: Which Red to Print On?
Share
Dark red is the colour of good wine, warm winter evenings and Christmas, which is why burgundy bags sell so well in autumn.
Burgundy, Burgundy Red, Bordeaux Red and Wine Red are all deep, wine-coloured reds, and the differences between our bags come more from the fabric than from the name. A white or cream print looks best on all of them, and our burgundy tote with logo print starts at €8.04 per bag at 25 pieces, excl. VAT.
In this guide I show you every dark red bag in our shop, what it is good for and what it costs.

Burgundy, Bordeaux or wine red: what is the difference?

All four names describe the same family of colour: a deep red with a little purple or brown in it.
Burgundy and Bordeaux are both named after French wine regions. In everyday language, people use them for the same dark wine red, and in many European languages "bordeaux" is simply the normal word for burgundy.
In our shop, the names come from different bag makers, so each name is the maker's own name for its dark red.
The Burgundy Red classic tote is listed with the colour code Pantone 209 C, and the Bordeaux Red organic twill tote with Pantone 209 U. That is the same colour number, once for coated and once for uncoated paper, so the two are very close.
Wine Red is the name of our jute bag, and on jute the colour looks a little softer and more natural because of the rough fibre.
You can look up the Pantone 209 C colour yourself to get a feeling for the shade.
So when you choose, look at the bag and the fabric first and the colour name second.

Which dark red bags can you choose from?
We have five dark red bags in the shop, plus a burgundy gymsac.
Here they are side by side, with the minimum order and the price per bag with a one-colour print.
| Bag | Colour name | Weight | Minimum | Price per bag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tote with logo print, 38 × 42 cm | Burgundy | 140 g/m² | 25 pcs | €8.04 at 25 pcs |
| Classic tote, 38 × 42 cm | Burgundy Red | 140 g/m² | 25 pcs | €8.67 at 25 pcs |
| Premium tote, 38 × 42 cm | Burgundy Red | 200 g/m² | 25 pcs | €8.72 at 25 pcs |
| Fairtrade organic twill tote, 38 × 42 × 7 cm | Bordeaux Red | 210 g/m² | 50 pcs | €9.90 at 50 pcs |
| Jute beach bag, 42 × 35 × 15 cm | Wine Red | 330 g/m² | 50 pcs | €8.88 at 50 pcs |
If you want a backpack instead of a tote, the Burgundy Red drawstring gymsac costs €9.10 per bag at 25 pieces.
Every bag in the table has its own photo in this guide, so you can compare the shades.
Which print colour works on a burgundy bag?
White is the safest print colour on burgundy.
It gives strong contrast, so even a small logo or thin text stays easy to read from a distance. Cream or a light beige looks a little softer and more elegant, and suits wine and Christmas themes well.
Black on burgundy is harder to read because both colours are dark.
I only recommend it for large, bold shapes, and I always show you a digital proof first so you can see how it looks.
For screen printing, the ink is mixed to the Pantone colour of your logo, so a pink, gold-coloured or light grey print is possible too.
If your design has many colours or a photo, full colour printing is the better choice: on the burgundy tote with logo print it costs €5.79 per bag at 100 pieces.

When in doubt, choose white and keep the design simple.

Why are burgundy bags good for Christmas gifts?
Burgundy feels festive without shouting "Christmas".
A bright red bag says Christmas very clearly, which is lovely in December but looks a bit out of season in March. A burgundy bag fits the season and still looks right all year, so people keep using it long after the holidays.
For a Christmas gift I would choose the Burgundy Red premium tote in 200 g/m² cotton.
It feels thicker in the hand than the classic tote and costs €8.72 per bag at 25 pieces, €5.45 at 100 pieces and €3.79 at 500 pieces, excl. VAT.
Put a bottle of wine, a candle or some chocolate inside, and the bag is the wrapping and part of the gift at the same time.
If you also want a classic bright red for your Christmas campaign, our page on red Christmas tote bags shows those options.
A gift that is used every week reminds people of you every week.
Thicker 200 g/m² cotton with long handles, made to be kept and reused.
Which bags suit wine shops, wineries and wine tastings?
Wine businesses are the natural home of burgundy bags.
The colour matches the product, so a wine shop, a winery or a tasting event does not need to explain anything: the bag already tells the story.
This month a wine merchant in Munich ordered 200 natural heavyweight organic totes from us for its customers, and a wine tasting company tried out its logo on our burgundy red classic tote in the design tool on our site.
For gift sets I like to pair a burgundy tote with a natural cotton bottle bag.
The bottle bag is made of 407 g/m² Fairtrade cotton canvas and measures 8 × 27 × 8 cm. For example, 50 premium burgundy totes and 50 bottle bags cost €360.00 and €315.50, so €675.50 together, excl. VAT.
If you want a more relaxed, summery look, the Wine Red jute beach bag has a wide base and room for several bottles.
It measures 42 × 35 × 15 cm, has a minimum of 50 pieces and costs €8.88 per bag at 50 pieces and €7.88 at 100 pieces.
Our buying guide for custom printed wine bags covers every bottle bag we have.
Wine and burgundy belong together, so let the bag do some of the selling for you.
Heavy Fairtrade canvas carrier for one bottle, with a fixed handle.
Wide jute bag with cotton handles and room for several bottles.
Which weight should you choose: 140, 200 or 210 g/m²?
The weight tells you how thick and heavy the fabric is.
At 140 g/m² the tote is light and soft, good for events and large giveaways. At 200 g/m² it feels sturdier and holds its shape better, which suits gifts.
The Bordeaux Red Fairtrade organic twill tote is the most special one.
It is made of 210 g/m² organic Fairtrade cotton in a twill weave, which gives the fabric a fine diagonal texture, and it has a 7 cm bottom gusset. The bag carries GOTS, Fairtrade, EU Ecolabel, SA8000 and Oeko-Tex certifications.
The minimum for this bag is 50 pieces, and it costs €9.90 per bag at 50 pieces and €9.17 at 100 pieces.
Our guide to cotton bag weights explains the differences in more detail.
Choose the light bag for numbers and the heavier bag for gifts.
Organic Fairtrade twill with a bottom gusset, colour code Pantone 209 U.
How does burgundy look on screen and in real life?
Dark reds are among the hardest colours to show correctly on a screen.
Depending on your phone or monitor, the same bag can look brighter red, browner or more purple than it really is. Daylight and indoor light change it again.
In real life all our burgundy bags are deep and calm, never bright.
If your brand colour has to match closely, send us the Pantone code or a photo of something in your colour. We will tell you which of our dark reds comes closest.
If you are choosing between red tones, you may also like our posts on purple, violet and plum bags and on fuchsia vs magenta.
Trust the colour code more than the photo on your screen.
Which businesses choose burgundy bags?
Burgundy is not only for wine.
It is a classic colour for universities, student associations and sports clubs, because many of them have used dark red in their crests for a long time. A burgundy bag with a white crest looks traditional in the best sense.
Restaurants, cafés and hotels like burgundy because it feels warm and welcoming.
A small white logo on a burgundy bag fits well next to dark wood, velvet chairs and candlelight, and it looks just as good on a takeaway counter.
Bookshops, theatres and cultural venues choose it for the same reason.
It reminds people of old book covers, theatre curtains and concert halls, so a burgundy bag feels cultured without trying too hard. For a theatre or a festival, the burgundy gymsac is a nice, playful alternative to the tote.
Fashion and beauty brands use it in autumn and winter collections, when the whole shop turns to deeper colours.
If your brand already has a dark red in its logo, a burgundy bag is often the easiest choice of all.
How do you combine burgundy with other colours?
Burgundy works very well together with natural and black.
A natural cotton bottle bag next to a burgundy tote looks calm and elegant, and a black bag next to a burgundy one looks modern and a little more serious.
Some customers order two bag colours with the same design, for example burgundy for customers and natural for staff.
Each bag colour is its own product in our shop. If you want to mix colours in one order, write to us before you order and we will check what is possible.
For the print, a single colour across all bags keeps your brand consistent.
White looks good on burgundy and black, and a burgundy print looks lovely on a natural bag, which gives you a matching pair.
A matching pair of bags often looks more thoughtful than two identical ones.
What do burgundy tote bags cost?
Prices on our site include the bag, the print and delivery within the EU.
Here are the current prices per bag with a one-colour print, excl. VAT.
| Bag | 25 pcs | 50 pcs | 100 pcs | 500 pcs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Burgundy tote with logo print, 140 g/m² | €8.04 | €4.71 | €3.17 | €2.06 |
| Burgundy Red classic tote, 140 g/m² | €8.67 | €5.47 | €3.87 | €2.48 |
| Burgundy Red premium tote, 200 g/m² | €8.72 | €7.20 | €5.45 | €3.79 |
| Bordeaux Red organic twill tote, 210 g/m² | - | €9.90 | €9.17 | €8.35 |
The biggest jump is between 25 and 50 pieces.
For example, 25 burgundy red classic totes cost €216.75 in total, while 100 burgundy totes with logo print cost €317.00. If you need 40 or 45 bags, check the price for 50 first, because it is often only a little more.
You can see all our red bags together in the red tote bags collection and on the page about red tote bags with custom print.
Prices in the shop can change, so always check the product page for today's price.
When should you order, and how does delivery work?
The usual production and delivery time is 10 to 15 working days from artwork approval.
For Christmas gifts, I recommend approving your artwork by mid-November. December is the busiest month for printers and couriers, and an early order gives you a calm buffer.
In the cart there is a box where you can write the date you need the bags, and we plan the order around it.
We deliver across the EU, and you can read more about where we deliver our printed bags.
The sooner the artwork is approved, the sooner your bags are on their way.
