Text-Only Tote Bags: When Words Are Your Whole Design
Share
Many small businesses tell me they hesitate to order printed bags because their logo is "just text".
Here is the good news: a text-only tote bag is not a second-best option.
Short answer: yes, words alone can be the whole design. A shop name in a good typeface, a short line that makes people smile, or the name of your street often looks calmer and more stylish than a busy logo, and it is easy to print in one colour from 25 pieces.
In this guide, I will show you which words work, how to choose a typeface and a size, which bag and print colours keep the text easy to read, and what text-only tote bags cost.

Why can a text-only tote bag work as well as a logo?
Because people read words faster than they decode symbols.
A logo mark only works when people already know it. Your shop name, written clearly, tells a stranger on the tram who you are straight away.
Many of the brands we admire most use little more than their name in one colour. The plain cotton around the words does half of the work, because empty space makes a design look confident.
There is also a practical side. One print colour is the cheapest way to print a bag, and a text design almost always fits in one colour.
So if your "logo" is your name in a font you like, you already have a design.
Which businesses do well with text-only tote bags?
Almost any business with a good name or a good line to say.
- Bookshops and cafés that want the shop name on a bag people carry for years.
- Small shops and studios without a designed logo yet, or with a logo that is just their name in a font.
- Events and festivals that print the event name, the city and the year.
- Companies with a campaign line or an internal motto for a team day or a conference.
- Neighbourhood businesses that use the street or area name as a little badge of local pride.
What they have in common is that the words mean something to the people who carry the bag.
Bookshop customers in particular love the bags of their favourite shopping spots, and a good name on a bag turns them into walking fans.
If the words make someone feel part of something, the bag gets carried.
What words work on a tote bag?
Short ones.
A tote bag is read in passing, often from a few metres away and for a second or two. Two to six words is the sweet spot for most text-only tote bags.
Here are the kinds of words that work well again and again:
- Your shop or company name, on its own, in one clean line.
- Name plus place, for example, your name with the city underneath in smaller letters.
- A short line that makes people smile, a little joke or a phrase your customers already say about you.
- A street or neighbourhood name, which works beautifully for cafés, bakeries and local shops.
- An event name with the year, so the bag becomes a souvenir of that day.
- A list of a few words, such as the things you sell or the values you stand for, stacked in a column.
A long sentence rarely works, because nobody reads a paragraph on a moving bag.
If you love a longer line, put the short version on the front and the full sentence small on the back.
Read your words out loud before you decide: if they sound good, they usually look good too.
How do you choose a typeface for a text-only tote bag?
Choose a typeface that you would happily see on your shop door.
When the words are the whole design, the typeface carries your personality. A classic serif feels calm and bookish, a clean sans serif feels modern and friendly, and a bold condensed face feels loud and sporty.
Handwritten and script fonts can look lovely, but they need to be large enough. Very thin strokes and tiny loops can close up when ink sits on cotton.
My simple rule is to use one typeface, two at most. One for the main word, and if needed a second, quieter one for a small line underneath.
Also check that you are allowed to use the font for printed products. Google Fonts explains in its FAQ that its fonts are open source and can be used in commercial products, which makes it a safe place to start.
If you already use a font on your website or menu, use the same one on the bag so it feels like one brand.

How big should the text be, and where does it go?
Bigger than you think, but not edge to edge.
On a standard 38 × 42 cm bag, a word design usually looks best in the upper middle of the front, a little above the centre. When the bag is full, the bottom bulges and text placed too low gets lost.
A name of one or two words can be set quite large, so it can be read from across a room. A small line underneath can be much smaller, as long as it is still clearly readable.
Try this at home: print your design on A4 paper at the size you have in mind, tape it to a bag or a cushion, and look at it from three or four metres away.
If you can read it there, so can the people walking past your customer.
We check thin lines and very small text at the proof stage and tell you if something will not print cleanly.
That way you see the size on the actual bag before anything is printed.
Which bag and print colour make words easy to read?
Strong contrast is the key to easy reading.
Text is less forgiving than a picture. A logo in a soft colour can still be recognised, but a word in a soft colour can become hard to read.
Black on natural cotton and white on black are the two safest choices for text-only tote bags. They are classic, they suit almost every brand, and they look good in photos.
| Bag colour | Print colours that read well | Mood |
|---|---|---|
| Natural | Black, navy, dark green, dark red | Warm, classic, bookish |
| Black | White, cream, yellow, gold-like ochre | Bold, modern, a little luxurious |
| Navy | White, cream, light yellow | Calm, nautical, trustworthy |
| Light colours such as light grey or pink | Black, navy, dark colours | Soft and friendly |
If you would like a quiet, elegant look, a light print on a light bag can also work, as long as the letters are large and simple.
I explain that look in our post on tone-on-tone tote bags, and the basics of picking ink colours are in how to choose print colours for your tote bags.
For a first order of text-only tote bags, contrast is the safest choice.
Light natural cotton with long handles, where black or dark text stands out clearly.
Black cotton that makes white or cream words look crisp and modern.
A real example: two slogans on one bag
One of my favourite orders this autumn shows how far words alone can go.
In October, a company in Germany ordered 200 natural 180 g/m² bags, placed as two orders of 100. Both orders had the same two-colour design on the front.
On the back, each order carried its own two-colour slogan. So the bags looked like one family, while each group got its own line to carry around.
We sent the proofs the day after the order, and they were approved the same day.
The lesson is simple: the back of a bag is a great place for words.
If you want to try different lines on different bags in one order, our post on different designs in one order explains the rules.
A second printed side is priced on the product page, so you can see the cost before you order.
A little thicker than 140 g/m², the bag chosen for the two-slogan order above.
What does a text-only tote bag cost?
Text-only tote bags are usually among the most affordable printed bags, because they need just one print colour.
Prices on our site drop as the quantity goes up. Here are the live prices per bag, excluding VAT, for the bags in this post.
| Bag | 25 pcs | 50 pcs | 100 pcs | 200 pcs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Natural 140 g/m², 1 colour | €7.47 | €4.14 | €2.60 | €2.00 |
| Natural 140 g/m², 2 colours | €10.00 | €5.41 | €3.23 | €2.36 |
| Black 140 g/m², 1 colour | €8.02 | €4.69 | €3.15 | €2.56 |
| Natural 180 g/m², 1 colour | €7.81 | €4.49 | €2.95 | €2.29 |
| Natural Marina canvas 340 g/m², 1 colour | €10.80 | €9.27 | €7.68 | €6.89 |
Some examples: 25 natural bags with black text cost €186.75 in total, 50 cost €207.00 and 100 cost €260.00.
That jump between 25 and 50 pieces is small, so it is worth asking yourself if you could use 50.
A second print colour for a small line underneath adds a bit, for example €323.00 instead of €260.00 for 100 natural bags.

How do you send your text so it prints exactly right?
The easiest way is a vector file with the text turned into shapes.
In most design programs, this is called "convert to outlines" or "create outlines". It means the letters are saved as shapes, so your design looks exactly the same on our side even if we do not have your font.
A vector PDF, SVG, AI or EPS file is ideal. A sharp PNG with a transparent background also works for many designs, and if you only have a rough file, we can often help you get it ready.
Spelling matters more on a text design than anywhere else.
Before anything is printed, you get a digital proof that shows your words on the bag. Read it slowly, ideally with a second person, because a missing letter on 200 bags is a sad thing to discover.
You approve the proof, and only then does production start.
If your text has many colours or a photo behind it, read our post on full colour printing on cotton bags first.

What are the most common mistakes with text-only designs?
Most of them come from trying to say too much.
- Too many words. A full sentence or a list of services turns the bag into a flyer.
- Too many fonts. Three or four typefaces on one bag look busy, not creative.
- Text too small. A website address in tiny letters cannot be read on a moving bag.
- Low contrast. Light grey text on a natural bag looks nice on screen and disappears on cotton.
- Placed too low. When the bag is full, text near the bottom folds away.
- No final spelling check. Always read the proof once more before you approve it.
A website address is a special case: if you add one, keep it short and put it small on the back.
When in doubt, take one word away.
How can you make a text-only tote bag feel special?
Choose a bag that feels as good as your words.
A thicker canvas bag with a simple word print feels like something you would buy in a nice shop, not a giveaway. Our organic canvas Marina tote, with its wooden toggle, is one of my favourite bags for exactly this.
Small choices add up. A print colour that matches your shop, a tone-on-tone print or the same word on two or three bag colours can turn a simple bag into something people collect.

The simpler the words, the more the bag itself can shine.

Sturdy organic canvas with a wooden toggle, for a word design that feels premium.

Frequently asked questions about text-only tote bags
Can a text-only tote bag look professional?
Yes. Many well-known brands use just their name in one colour. A clean typeface, strong contrast and enough empty space make a text-only tote bag look confident and professional.
How many words should I put on a tote bag?
Two to six words work best for most bags. People see a bag for a second or two, so short words are read and remembered.
What is the cheapest way to print text on a tote bag?
One print colour on a classic cotton bag. Our natural 140 g/m² tote costs €7.47 per bag at 25 pieces and €2.60 at 100 pieces with a 1-colour print, excluding VAT.
Which font is best for a tote bag?
A clear, bold typeface that you are allowed to use commercially. Very thin or tiny script fonts can close up on cotton, so choose a weight with solid strokes.
Do I need a logo to order printed bags?
No. You can upload your shop name or any short text as your design. A text-only tote bag is printed exactly like a logo.
Can I print different words on different bags?
Yes, there are a few ways to do it. See our post on different designs in one order for the rules, or write to us before you order.
Can I print text on both sides of the bag?
Yes. A second printed side is priced on the product page, so you can put your name on the front and a short line on the back.
How long does it take to get text-only tote bags?
Usually 10 to 15 working days after you approve the artwork. If you have a fixed date, add it in the cart and we will tell you if it works.
Let your words do the work
You do not need a fancy logo to have a beautiful bag.
Pick a few words that mean something, give them a typeface you love and a strong contrast, and leave plenty of plain cotton around them.
Text-only tote bags are simple to design, affordable from 25 pieces and often more stylish than you expect.
Sometimes the best design is just your name, printed well.
